If you are an international student coming to Spain to take one or more courses, you will need a student visa, and to obtain it you will need a health insurance, a specific policy that meets all the necessary requirements to obtain your visa at your embassy or consulate.
For your situation, Sanitas offers the International Students policy, which meets these requirements set by the Spanish government, while keeping rates low to encourage young people to come and discover the country.
In this guide, we will explain in detail why this policy is perfect for you, and the steps to easily purchase it.
1.- REQUIREMENTS for your Health Insurance for International Students in Spain
Our Sanitas International Students Insurance meets all the student visa requirements required to enter Spain, which are:
- The student must have comprehensive health insurance with no limitations.
- The insurance must not have co-payments.
- There will be no waiting periods, so the student can use the services from day one.
- The policy must include repatriation coverage.
You also need to keep in mind that to purchase this medical insurance, you must be between 14 and 35 years old, the course duration must be longer than 3 months, and the policy will only have the same duration as the course you will be taking in Spain, with a maximum of one year.
If you are a minor, an adult will have to be the policyholder, and you will be the insured person or beneficiary.
2.- FEATURES of your Health Insurance for International Students in Spain
By purchasing the International Students policy, you will have access to more than 58,000 doctors and can visit over 4,500 Sanitas medical centers, with access to a multitude of medical specialties (Dermatology, allergology, psychiatry, endocrinology, urology, cardiology, ophthalmology, gynecology, traumatology, oncology, dietetics and nutrition, etc.)
You can go to the emergency room, request a second medical opinion, receive surgical procedures, hospitalization in a private room, home emergencies, emergency care during your travels outside of Spain, and you will have dental coverage.
Repatriation in case of death will be included, and you will also have access to our 24-hour video consultation service, even for emergencies.
You can choose which doctors you want to see and which hospital you want to be in within our network of providers. You won’t have to wait, fill out forms, or pay anything.
You will have access to our online platform, where you can manage your policy and search for doctors and centers to visit.
Keep in mind that health policies are for full calendar months; whether you sign up on the 12th, 15th, or 26th of the month, the policy will start on the 1st.
3.- PURCHASING your Health Insurance for International Students in Spain
Step 1: Request your personalized quote
The first thing you will need to do is request a quote from us, which we will calculate based on your age, the city where you will reside in Spain, and the month your policy needs to start.
For us to send you this quote, you simply need to fill out this short form. In it, you will have to select the Sanitas International Students policy and add your personal details.
We will be happy to send you your personalized quote, as well as all the detailed information about your policy’s features and coverage. You will receive all information and documents in your preferred language, Spanish or English.
Remember that we can only provide quotes up to 3 months in advance (the current month + the next two months). If your course starts more than three months from now, we can send you an estimate, but you will have to wait until it’s within 3 months of your course to get your final personalized quote.
Step 2: Sending the necessary documentation
To purchase your international student health insurance in Spain, you will need to send us the following documents:
- A copy of your valid passport.
If you have a NIE (Foreigner Identity Number), we will ask for it instead of the passport.
The document must be valid and include your signature.
If you are a minor, we will also need a copy of the passport of the adult who will be the policyholder, likely your father or mother.
- Letter from your University or School.
You will need to request a document that shows the exact start and end dates of the course you will be taking in Spain, as well as proof that the full course fee has been paid. (Important: It must state the exact start date and the exact end date of the course. It is not valid if it only shows ‘course 25/26’, for example).
All universities and schools in Spain are familiar with this procedure and are used to issuing this document for all international students.
Step 3: Sign your policy and make the payment
If you agree with the quote you received, we will send you a link where you will need to fill out a more detailed online form. Once it is filled out and validated, we will send you your insurance application for you to sign and send back to us.
The payment must be for the full course period and at the time of purchasing the policy. You can pay by bank transfer or with your credit card.
Step 4: Receive your official certificate
Finally, we will ask for proof of payment, and once verified, we will send you your official certificate to present at your embassy or consulate when applying for your student visa.
The whole hiring process can take 2 to 5 days, depending on how quickly you send us the documents and make the payment.
By purchasing your policy with us, you can easily make any inquiry or request related to your policy for its entire duration. Just contact us by email or WhatsApp, and we will be there to help you with whatever you may need.
Important: The policy cann´t be canceled. Make sure your visa is not refused.
